Chocolate-y Browns Boost Curb Appeal, According to Behr

Chocolate brown hit the runways and effortlessly made its way into home interiors this year—and according to Behr Paint Company, the warm shade deserves some recognition on the exterior, too.

Behr started naming an annual Exterior Color of the Year in 2023 with the goal of helping homeowners make the outside of their home look as good as the inside. For 2024, Tugboat—a “sophisticated blend of muted brown and gray tones that is reminiscent of weathered materials from boats at sea”—nabbed the title.

“Our 2024 Exterior Stain Color of the Year provides a new perspective on color for exterior wood stains, adding both character and freshness to projects,” Erika Woelfel, vice president of Color and Creative Services, said in a statement. “With a timeless finish, Tugboat’s versatile brownish gray color provides organic beauty to make any outdoor space feel like a safe harbor.”

Behr’s Exterior Stain Color of the Year 2024 works in tandem with Behr’s Curb Appeal Collection, a thoughtfully-chosen compilation of exterior paints, stains, and spray paints that are on-trend and (you guessed it) increase your home’s curb appeal.

The majority—55%—of Americans said in a survey commissioned by Behr that they found “the thought of painting their home’s exterior” to be stressful, while 74% said it would be “easier to make color decisions if they could choose from a curated collection of exterior paints.”

“We recognized the challenge consumers are constantly facing when it comes to the color selection process—especially for exterior projects,” Andy Lopez, Behr’s head of marketing, said in a statement. “By offering a collection of curated colors in a diverse product offering, we aim to provide consumers with the confidence they need to select a color and complete their exterior projects with ease.”

And evidently, chocolate-y browns deliver when it comes to trendiness and timelessness. Tugboat is a versatile stain color that enhances your wood grain, and you can use it to get a refined look on more than just your home’s exterior: Use it on decks, patios, porches, and paint your fence and front door to tie it all together. Plus, browns and chocolate tones pair perfectly with our favorite colors for outdoor spaces: They match with neutrals like gray and white and more bold shades like olive green, baby blue, and pink.

If you’re ready to upgrade your exterior and impress your neighbors (or potential buyers!) just in time for the outdoor season, Tugboat is available exclusively at The Home Depot.
